Mural statement by the artist – Christine Martin

The mural features an androgynous main character who grows up through their wonderful experiences in kindergarten. They start with ‘Being’, existing in a peaceful world with native animals as friends. As the child starts ‘Becoming’ something beyond their immediate world, they make a new friend and they play ball together. In the final frame, the child has evolved to ‘Belong’ to part of a group of friends, and they sit beneath flowering wattle and banksia trees, reading a book together. Circles are prevalent in the work that stretches over 6 metres in length, symbolising life, growth, new beginnings and the harmonious and inclusive nature of birth, family, kindergarten and community.
